One Feather at a Time
Kristen Benson
Illustrated by Nicole Curti
A young bird loses her feathers after a fall and is helped by some new friends to find new wings.
Mim is a pelican in search of food. Landing at the riverbank, she doesn’t notice a prickly acacia bush, and lands in it with a thump. With her feathers now in tatters and her home far away, Mim seeks support from a kindly Kookaburra who gives her a feather of his own. As other birds hear Mim’s plight, they too stop, offering their feathers. Eventually, with some river reed, Mim is given a new pair of wings to help her fly. A touching story about compassion and empathy that shows the spirit of community and helping others despite their differences.

While home is in Australia,
Kristen Benson is a wanderer at heart. She has been writing for most of her life as a way of understanding herself and the world around her, believing that everyone has a story to tell. Being a mum to two children fills her heart and she is happiest with her family by the ocean, in nature, and exploring the world. One Feather at a Time is inspired by the love and support of her cherished tribe.
Nicole Curti grew up reading children’s books and watching animation films, dreaming of one day creating her own. In 2010 Nicole graduated from IED as an illustrator and animator, and after gaining work experience elsewhere, decided to devote herself entirely to this field. She has since collaborated with many Publishers and private customers. Nicole takes her inspiration from the nature, mountains and flowers found around her.
