My Best Birthday Cake Ever

Philippa Brown Illustrated by Hiruni kariyawasam

A girl's birthday is disrupted by illness, but hospital staff create an unexpected celebration.

A young girl has been planning her seventh birthday cake for months—a magical fairyland creation that she hopes will be her best ever. But when she wakes up sick on her birthday and needs emergency surgery, all her celebration plans are cancelled. Disappointed and recovering in the hospital, she feels her special day is ruined. Yet the caring doctors and nurses have a beautiful surprise waiting, teaching her that the true magic of a birthday lies in the people who care for you. A heartwarming and tenderly illustrated story about resilience, kindness, and finding joy in unexpected places.

  • Selling Point 1: This gentle story helps children cope with medical experiences and shows how healthcare workers often go above and beyond to care for their patients.
  • Selling Point 2: The narrative teaches children that sometimes the most meaningful celebrations come from unexpected kindness rather than elaborate plans.
  • Selling Point 3: The book demonstrates resilience and finding joy in difficult circumstances while celebrating the compassion of medical professionals who care for children.
  • Charming, expressive illustrations that vividly capture the story’s emotional moments, hospital scenes, and the magical birthday cake.
Philippa Brown lives in Sydney, Australia. Together with her husband she has raised three children, and over this time has fallen deeply in love with children’s literature. Philippa has worked for twenty years as a general practitioner.  As a doctor, she especially loved helping children, but her love of children’s stories eventually won, and she retired early from general practice to write. The New Baby’s Bunny was Philippa’s first published story. Flowers from Felix is her second.
