The King Who Missed Home

Harison Butler Illustrated by Jeff Dehut

A child’s fantastical escape to Pluto teaches him to appreciate family love and home comforts.

Sent to his room after misbehaving, a young boy imagines blasting off to Pluto, where he’d be king with no rules, no bedtime, and endless fun. Yet as his fantasy unfolds, he realizes that unlimited freedom means missing out on his parents’ care, home-cooked meals, bedtime stories, and loving guidance. Through imaginative verse and out-of-this-world illustrations, he discovers that home—even with its rules—is exactly where he belongs.

  • Imaginative exploration of consequences — Uses fantasy and space adventure to help children understand that rules and boundaries exist because parents care, making abstract concepts about discipline and family structure tangible and relatable
  • Emotional regulation and conflict resolution — Provides a healthy model for processing anger and disappointment by encouraging children to think through their feelings rather than acting impulsively, ultimately leading to genuine apologies and reconciliation
  • Gratitude and family appreciation themes — Teaches children to recognize and value the everyday comforts and care that family provides, helping them shift perspective from focusing on restrictions to appreciating love and security
  • Vivid, playful artwork captures the contrast between the thrilling, expansive world of Pluto and the cozy, comforting atmosphere of home.
